Ladon

Anh Thu Ho’s social venture, Ladon, is a mobile platform connecting non-English speakers to compassionate community translators who can offer support instantly. By bridging language barriers for immigrant communities, the team aims to help these communities gain better access to social services and economic opportunities. Recently, the venture reported that it helped responders to the Harvey & Irma hurricanes communicate with non-English speakers by providing free language support for these groups and translating over 90 pages of documents.

Anh Thu Ho

Anh-Thu Ho (pronounced as /ɛŋ tʰuh ho/) is a BioEngineering major from both the University of California, Berkeley and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (it’s complicated). Since her early teenage years, she has been joining and organizing various charity or volunteering projects to serve underprivileged communities in different countries. In 2015 alone, she joined a medical outreach to Batam Island, Indonesia where she helped doctors do basic medical check-ups and dispense medication. She also spearheaded Paint It On - a community art project in Danang Cancer Hospital, Vietnam.

Yulkendy Valdez

Yulkendy is a social entrepreneur, storyteller, and public speaker. She has diverse experiences across the private and public sector. She has worked with Bank of America Student Leaders Program, EY, Puma, and Innosight Consulting. Beyond her experience in the private sector, Yulkendy has worked with top nonprofits in St. Louis, Missouri (her hometown!) including the International Institute of St.

Isthmus Adaptive Wheelchair Basketball Initiative

Derek and Sally are launching a junior wheelchair basketball team and a suite of programs for the children to help with their personal and athletic development along with a support network for the families.  They will also hold public demonstrations of wheelchair basketball to build awareness and promote the participants as confident and able individuals.  Derek, himself an amputee and wheelchair basketball player with experience in this league, has a huge personal passion for these teams, as well as real insights into how to build a fantastic team as the nucleus for an impactful venture. 

Derek Hoot

Derek is a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign majoring in Political Science and working towards an Arabic minor. He plays wheelchair basketball at a collegiate level and have been a right-leg amputee since he was six years old. Derek began playing wheelchair basketball in 7th grade on a Madison, Wisconsin-based team called the Mad City Badgers. When he graduated high school, the team disbanded due to lack of funds and recruits.

Play it On

Play It On works to improve intercultural understanding through sports. The organization believes that sports and play is the ultimate facilitator of mutual bonds between people giving them a unique opportunity to connect. In the process of creating intercultural exchanges, Play It On also improves the conditions to play for children all over the world. Over the last 2,5 year the organization has reached more than 5.000 children.

UNIDAS

Jessica and Mauro Espinoza co-founded ‘Unidas’ in 2009 to empower women who have been victims of gender-based violence in Mexico, Ecuador, and Ghana. To assist in skill development, Unidas piloted a basic curriculum and training program to teach the women financial literacy and business skills needed to plan and operate successful microenterprises and manage household finances.
